Several universities and private companies are studying the production of bio-fuel starting from tobacco: this plant can produce a large amount of sugars and oils more efficiently than other crops (Cleantechnica, Energy Boom).
An advantage of using tobacco as a source of bio-fuel compared to food crops such as maize or sugar cane is that this would not drive an increase of food raw materials as it happened with maize when the United States devoted very large areas of maize crop to the production of ethanol.
