Before the arrival of chemical synthesis crop protection products, tobacco was used to produce insecticides. The Italian Monopoly normally produced insecticides up to World War II. In the Philippines the government has authorized the use of tobacco dust as molluscicide in fish farms, as it is much less toxic than the chemical products.
